    A multifrequency evaluation of active and passive microwave sensors for oil spill detection and assessment

    An evaluation is given of how active and passive microwave sensors can best be used in oil spill detection and assessment. Radar backscatter curves taken over oil spills are presented and their effect on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are discussed. Plots of microwave radiometric brightness variations over oil spills are presented and discussed. Recommendations as to how to select the best combination of frequency, viewing angle, and sensor type for evaluation of various aspects of oil spills are also discussed

    DNA models of trinucleotide frameshift deletions: the formation of loops and bulges at the primer–template junction

    Although mechanisms of single-nucleotide residue deletion have been investigated, processes involved in the loss of longer nucleotide sequences during DNA replication are poorly understood. Previous reports have shown that in vitro replication of a 3′-TGC TGC template sequence can result in the deletion of one 3′-TGC. We have used low-energy circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy to investigate the conformations and stabilities of DNA models of the replication intermediates that may be implicated in this frameshift. Pyrrolocytosine or 2-aminopurine residues, site-specifically substituted for cytosine or adenine in the vicinity of extruded base sequences, were used as spectroscopic probes to examine local DNA conformations. An equilibrium mixture of four hybridization conformations was observed when template bases looped-out as a bulge, i.e. a structure flanked on both sides by duplex DNA. In contrast, a single-loop structure with an unusual unstacked DNA conformation at its downstream edge was observed when the extruded bases were positioned at the primer–template junction, showing that misalignments can be modified by neighboring DNA secondary structure. These results must be taken into account in considering the genetic and biochemical mechanisms of frameshift mutagenesis in polymerase-driven DNA replication

    The Rise and Fall, and the Rise (Again) of Feminist Research in Music: 'What Goes Around Comes Around'

    This article reports from a two-phase study that involved an analysis of the extant literature followed by a three-part survey answered by seventy-one women composers. Through these theoretical and empirical data, the authors explore the relationship between gender and music’s symbolic and cultural capital. Bourdieu’s theory of the habitus is employed to understand the gendered experiences of the female composers who participated in the survey. The article suggests that these female composers have different investments in gender but that, overall, they reinforce the male habitus given that the female habitus occupies a subordinate position in relation to that of the male. The findings of the study also suggest a connection between contemporary feminism and the attitudes towards gender held by the participants. The article concludes that female composers classify themselves, and others, according to gendered norms and that these perpetuate the social order in music in which the male norm dominates

    Global variations in diabetes mellitus based on fasting glucose and haemogloblin A1c

    Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) are both used to diagnose diabetes, but may identify different people as having diabetes. We used data from 117 population-based studies and quantified, in different world regions, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes, and whether those who were previously undiagnosed and detected as having diabetes in survey screening had elevated FPG, HbA1c, or both. We developed prediction equations for estimating the probability that a person without previously diagnosed diabetes, and at a specific level of FPG, had elevated HbA1c, and vice versa. The age-standardised proportion of diabetes that was previously undiagnosed, and detected in survey screening, ranged from 30% in the high-income western region to 66% in south Asia. Among those with screen-detected diabetes with either test, the agestandardised proportion who had elevated levels of both FPG and HbA1c was 29-39% across regions; the remainder had discordant elevation of FPG or HbA1c. In most low- and middle-income regions, isolated elevated HbA1c more common than isolated elevated FPG. In these regions, the use of FPG alone may delay diabetes diagnosis and underestimate diabetes prevalence. Our prediction equations help allocate finite resources for measuring HbA1c to reduce the global gap in diabetes diagnosis and surveillance.peer-reviewe

    Modelling of guided waves in a composite plate through a combination of physical knowledge and regression analysis

    The use of high-frequency guided waves, such as Rayleigh and Lamb waves (actively) or acoustic emissions (passively), has become increasingly prominent in engineering applications, particularly for structural health monitoring (SHM) and, more traditionally, non-destructive evaluation (NDE). In comparison to low-frequency analysis, guided waves have the additional benefit of being able to locate damage with finer spatial resolution (controlled by the diffraction limit). This paper looks into developing a health-monitoring strategy for fibre-reinforced polymer structures using ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs); part of the remit is to determine a methodology for modelling of UGWs propagation. As fibres within such a material act as a secondary guide for these waves, time-space modelling of the waves is difficult. Presented here is a novel methodology utilising a physics-incorporated, data-driven model to determine the feature-space of UGW propagation. The method uses Gaussian processes and in this paper is made a comparison between different kernel-based methods. By careful consideration of these machine learning techniques, more robust and generalised models can be generated
